Map with high detail airports

  • Here's the link: Aerofly detailed airports & regions

This map shows where Aerofly's high resolution aerial images, and detailed airports are located. It currently only shows detailed airports in area's where there isn't high resolution aerial imagery.

The airport data was based on the blue airports in the Mapbox in Armitage 's Missionsgerät, but Mapbox had a few issues. So I made my own in Google Maps.

I still want to add airports from the area's with high resolution aerial images, but that's probably going to take a bit more time.

As we said everytime the question comes up, because we are constantly adding new airports and are working behind the scenes on airports we don't want to announce quite yet such a map is out of date very quickly and thus we don't publish one ourselves.

Great to see that someone made the effort to make it anyway, so will you be updating the map every month for the next 3-5 years as well? 8o

New airports every month? I only believe it by seeing it with my own eyes. 😏😏

Don't you at least have a list of all custom-built airports? If so, surely it wouldn't take much effort to publish that and update it periodically when you add new airports? Or community members could take that list and update it themselves.

  • In the TAP file for each airfield there is a code line [tag]. This could also be used, among other things, for a detailed classification:

    - airport0 = simple (only runway)

    - airport1 = normal (standard design)

    - airport2 = super (detailed design)

This could then be read out automatically.

I just checked out the map,

Why did you leave out the US west coast and east coast airports? Airports like SFO, LAX, Sacramento, etc. are all hand made 3D airports as well. Basically anything in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado are hand made airports because they come from a time before automated airports were even a thing. And so is the east coast with JFK, LGA, etc.

Please make sure to include all airports to avoid confusion. Users may think that only the airports on this map are included which is far from the truth. There are also 10s of thousands of airports that are available and not fully detailed and the map should also have an option to display those, too.

  • In FS 4 there is a list of all airfields. I am wondering whether a simple — standard — detailed classification is possible based on the amount of data.

  • Jet-Pack (IPACS)/Jan , I think that you are asking a bit much from someone who isn’t on IPACS’s payroll. I put in all the airports manually, largely based on the Missionsgerät, since I only play on IPad myself. As ApfelFlieger is pointing out, this could probably be automated, but that’s beyond my skill level.

Concerning the lack of airports in America and Europe, it’s because that wasn’t the primary goal of the project. My aim was to make a more easy to use map, than what was available in the Mapbox in the Missionsgerät, that would show me where detailed airports are located outside of the regions from previous Aerofly releases. I’ve already stated this at the start of the thread.

Jan, I know that you are trying to prevents untruths from spreading (As we all should), but that’s not the case, as long as people can read. I do intend on adding detailed airports from Switzerland, Western USA, Northeastern USA, South Florida and Western Europe with time. Updating is another matter, but I probably make sure that the date, of the last update of the map, will be visible somewhere.👍

If only we could filter detailed airports clearly within the app…🤔 (The same is becoming true for the aircraft and livery selection screens by the way😂)

The only text that explains what the map shows is "This is a map that shows where the high resolution aerial images and detailed airports are located" ... so a user who sees that map immediately assumes that this is all there is. It does not explain why most of the detailed airports are not included in this map of all detailed airports?! And then they may not buy the product even though we have more than what that map shows.

That's the reason why we never made such a map, because there are too many airports to keep track of and they keep being added in the background (most without announcement) and there are airports everywhere now, thanks to global streaming. So you can just add all airports then defeating the purpose of such maps. And we are also still working on improving global airports, so at some point in the future there may not be any noticeable difference between a hand made airport and a auto-generated airport with all terminals, parking positions, etc.

  • Areas with high-resolution images can be identified in FS 4 and FS Global in the "Location" menu.

The only thing missing is the recognition of the level of detail for the airfields. In my opinion, this could also be implemented in the system in a similar way to the marking of military airfields.:/

Actually the source of the Mapbox map is build via automation: it simply reads AFS4's directory, downloads an open-source airport database and compiles everything into a massive GeoJSON file. Martijn22 If there is public interest I can make the source code of the small programme as well as the GeoJSON file open-source too.

Obviously it would be best if IPACS would make publishing its airport information in a public format part of their compilation process. Given the interest of pilots if there home / favourite airport is present, I think it would be time wisely spent by IPACS. Even more so if IPACS is unhappy with the community efforts. ;)

  • Just a short update from me. I should have added most of the airports, marked blue on the Aerofly Missionsgerät, to the map. This finishes what I set out to do, until IPACS details another airport. I may occasionally add an airport that I think is interesting, and that deserves to be on the map.

I've also renamed the map to "The unofficial Aerofly detailed airports & regions map", just for my own sanity, if I quit updating the map. The description also includes a date of the last map update.

The map now indicates if an airport doesn't have a long runway. Airports marked with a straight-wing aircraft only have runways shorter than 1500 meters (~5000 ft). So take a bit more caution if you're trying to use these airports with a Learjet or Q400.

If there are any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

    That's all for now folks.

Great map, very helpful! The canaries islands are also high resolution sceneries;)
